Trying to answer questions before you have studied the material — and getting them wrong — can still boost memory as much as testing after study, including in healthy older adults.
What the researchers did
Mera, Dianova, and Marin-Garcia ran three laboratory experiments comparing different ways of learning new facts. The core contrast was errorful learning (attempting answers, often incorrectly) versus errorless copying (simply reading and copying correct information).
In Experiment 1, participants either took a pretest before seeing the material, a post-test after studying, or only copied answers without being tested. Experiment 2 added a copy-test-copy sequence to see whether test timing mattered when copying was involved. Experiment 3 repeated the pretest-versus-copying comparison with older adults to check whether the pattern held across age groups. After each study, the team also asked people how effective they thought each method was.
What they found
- Pretest, post-test, and copy-test-copy all produced better memory than errorless copying alone.
- There was no clear winner among the three testing-based routines — timing did not separate them in these experiments.
- Intrusion errors (remembering wrong guesses as facts) were minimal when wrong pretest answers were analyzed.
- In Experiment 3, pretesting still beat copying in older adults — the authors describe the effect as robust across age.
- Across experiments, participants consistently underestimated how helpful testing would be — a metacognitive gap between felt effort and actual learning.
What this means for learners and educators
- You do not always need to “study first, quiz later.” A short pretest — even one where you fail — can prime learning as effectively as a post-test in these controlled settings.
- Copy-test-copy may be worth trying when material is dense: read, attempt recall, then re-read with the answer visible.
- Teachers can use low-stakes pretests to signal what matters without treating wrong guesses as failure; the data here suggest wrong attempts rarely poison later memory.
- Because learners underrate testing, explain why quizzes feel hard but work — otherwise students may revert to passive rereading.
Limitations and what we don't know yet
These were small-scale lab experiments with short retention intervals — not semester-long courses or real exam stakes. Materials and question formats may differ from your subject. The study does not prove pretesting always equals post-testing in every classroom; it shows no disadvantage to testing before exposure in this design. Online, distracted, or low-motivation settings may behave differently from the supervised sessions used here.
